Qld: Rescuers search croc-infested river for missing man

TOWNSVILLE, April 22 AAP - Rescuers were searching a crocodile-infested Cape York riverfor a man believed to have been catapaulted into the water in a motorcycle accident, policesaid today.

Cairns District Inspector Rolf Straatemeier said the 36-year-old man was a pillionpassenger on a motorcycle which crashed on the Mission River bridge, near Weipa in farnorth Queensland, on Saturday.

"(It is believed) that the passenger may have been, I suppose, catapaulted into theMission River ... and we are trying to find him," Insp Straatemeier said.

The rider of the motorbike was found at the accident site on Saturday night and wasairlifted to Cairns Base Hospital, in a serious condition.

"It wasn't until some time later that police were notified that there was a missingperson, and possibly he was with the rider," Inspector Straatemeier said.

"He was seen with the rider earlier on in the night."

Local fishermen, volunteers, and police from Weipa and Thursday Island were participatingin the search, Inspector Straatemeier said.

"A helicopter, seven vessels and numerous fishing boats will also be involved in thesearch today," he said.

There were crocodiles in the river, the inspector said.
