Vic: George anoints likely successor as ACTU chief

Departing ACTU president JENNIE GEORGE says she's made it very clear she won't leave
her job until she's sure a woman will replace her in the unions' top post.

Ms GEORGE has indicated Australian Education Union president SHARAN BURROW is likely
to succeed her as head of the nation's peak union body in March next year.

The ACTU chief had been expected to quit in the middle of next year, but she announced
last week she'll go earlier.

Ms GEORGE says she's very proud to leave the union movement with many more women in
leadership positions than in 1983, when she was the first woman elected to the ACTU executive.

And ACTU secretary-elect GREG COMBET says under Ms GEORGE, unions have allowed many
more women to play an active role in the ACTU and the union movement.
